Weaning: Mother's milk from day ONE is rich in colostrom antibodies. During the first 36 hours after whelping, the Mother's milk contains high levels of antibodies. Antibody-rich first milk is called colostrum. The “passive transfer” of antibodies from dam to pup will provide protection for the first 6–16 weeks of the pup’s life. In time the antibody levels in pups reach 60–97% of their Mother's protective level. It is IMPORTANT to have a puppy weaned (NO NURSING) from it's Mother 1-2 wks. prior to vaccination or the vaccine that was administered is basically VOID & will not protect the puppy from contagious diseases. A vaccine can not provide immunity for a pup until the maternal antibodies are low enough to NOT fight off the dormant virus in the vaccines. Our Mothers usually have the puppies weaned by 6 wks. old. The puppies are eating solid dry food well at this time & Mom doesn't care for those sharp teeth biting her. Weaning the pups at 6 wks. is a perfect age because it helps the puppies learn how to be independant & their personalities just soar. Not nursing 1-2 wks. prior to vaccinations is proven to help the puppy's first vaccine be more effective in test studies, my Vet has told me this. You can't continue to let a puppy nurse all the way up until they go home, weaning must be done properly.
Feedings: I start my puppies with a small amount of pureed Eukanuba puppy food at 3 wks. old, they don't usually eat much at this time. They will play in it or act like what is this? Take a nose dive in it, skate in it & walk in it and track paw prints all over the floor, LOL! BUT, by 4 wks. old they are eating puree like little piggies. By 5 wks. old, switch to just moistened food smashed with a fork and they are offered dry food too. By 5-1/2 wks. to 6 wks. they are crunching away on their plain dry food. Puppies have very sensitive systems like a baby, brand new. I can't tell you how many times I had to change my childrens formula when they were babies. I start the pups out on Eukanuba small breed 20 lbs. and under 1-12 mos at 3 wks. to slowly work the food into them. You should never change foods in a young puppy because it can cause Gastro-Intestinal UPSET and or DISTRESS. Please speak to Barbara or Myself (Marilynn) before switching your young puppy's food or PLEASE consult your Vet first. We can not offer a warranty on a puppy covering vital organs that is being fed GENERIC food or food that we're not familiar with. Eukanuba is Vet recomended & fully trusted by us!
Why this food? I can't tell you how many times people, including customers and My Vet has made comments about how shiny my dog's coats are and how healthy looking they look. My Vet asked me once what I was feeding my dogs/puppies & I told her Eukanuba and she gives me the thumbs up! Generic foods will make your dog poop more because there's nothing nutritional about it so, it is what it is "poop". If you feed your dog generic foods you are basically feeding it poop and or waste. It may seem sometimes like this brand is too expensive, I'll just get this cheap bag until payday, but if you only knew what you're doing to your dogs overall health & coat. They could develop internal problems from it, get serious dry skin and their coats could fall out. Take the Eukanuba challenge! This company was never involved with any dog food recalls either. Food coloring in dog foods is linked to causing cancer in dogs and cats. Sometimes without even knowing it people are giving their pets a slow death sentence. Your pet's are innocent in taking the cancerous poison. You're in control of what is being put into your puppy's mouth so, make the right decision to treat him or her right. Would you feed your child poop? so, never feed Fido that either. We also recommend Iams proactive smart puppy 1-12 mos.
Taking puppy home: By the time you get your puppy at 7-1/2 wks. to 8 wks. they are sleeping the whole night through without a peep however, any puppy is going to have a transitioning period for about 7-10 days to learn all the new sights, sounds & smells of their new home environment. I keep the T.V. on all night for my dogs on low. Barbara has a more quiet setting at night but, all of our puppies are used to hearing common household sounds. Barbara & I guarantee our puppies to be less fussier when weaning the puppies at 6 wks. old. We DO NOT take mom away and never let the pups see her again but, nursing is not aloud past week 6 & I think Our Girls are glad too! Those teeth are like needles, ouchie!!
